“Village Gate Reunion Show” a nostalgic meet-up of singers who worked there 40 years ago

“The Village Gate Reunion Show” at Urban Stages pulled together singers that met and performed on the “patio” of that famous Greenwich Village jazz club and theater when they were young, about 40 years ago. Not all have seen each other since then. You could hear the talent some had, still have. It’s a nostalgia show.

Sue Matsuki, who organized the event, has won numerous prizes, including the Julie Wilson Award and MAC awards and has played the major jazz rooms. She did jazz standards, such as “This could be the start of something…” A fine melodious voice, an elegant charmer.

Greg Caldarone, with a terrific rich baritone (near opera quality) with a jazzy inflection, did “Taking a chance on love.” He is jazzy but also theatrical.

Jennifer Pace, a piano bar singer (“Marie’s Crisis”), belted out “It’s that old devil moon” and “Stardust” arranged by her father, Gary Pace. Her alto voice resonates.

Ian Daizey, a swinging pianist, came in from Pennsylvania to play “Boogie Woogie Santa Claus,” appropriate for the season. Susan Saar, who wasn’t on the bill, showed up in the audience, was invited on stage and fit right in with “No More Blues.”

The event was part of Urban Stages’ jazz weeks, which are featured every December. This year’s series was produced by Sue Matsuki.

“Winter Rhythms,” Dec 4-16. Urban Stages Theater, 259 West 30th Street, NYC, (212) 421-1380. Dec 15, 2024.
